Celebrate Environment Day with Eco-Friendly Plants

  • By Kratika
  • •  May 30, 2025

It’s June, and we’re ready to commemorate our favourite time of the year- World Environment Day! Personally, this day reminds me of the clean-up drives we used to have back in school and college. But outside of institutions, what steps are we taking to make a significant change? At Urvann, we believe that welcoming plants into your life is one of the simplest and most measurable steps you can take today.

Let’s Go Back in Time to Know Why We Celebrate World Environment Day

In 1972, a conference on the Human Environment was held in Stockholm to address environmental concerns as a matter of international importance. Since then, every year on June 5th, we dedicate a day to reflect on what the environment means to us. This program, led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), aims to engage a global audience in discussions on the same critical issue. Each year, the conversations focus on different aspects of environmental preservation and sustainability.

How to Celebrate World Environment Day as Plant Lovers?

World Environment Day is incredibly important for every plant lover out there, especially those who are building their own little green sanctuaries at home, in their workspace, or anywhere they can. It’s a reminder that every plant we add to our spaces contributes not just to the beauty around us, but also to the health of our planet. If you’re wondering how to celebrate, here are some World Environment Day celebration ideas that our team has thought of, and they will inspire you to make a positive impact.

  1. Gift a Plant: On this special occasion, why not gift a plant to your friends or family? It’s a meaningful gesture that not only spreads the message of sustainability but also serves as a reminder that caring for the environment is essential. Plants like succulents, flowering plants, and indoor plants offer numerous options that you can explore.
  2. Start a Zen Space: Another wonderful way to celebrate is by creating your own Zen space. This can be a peaceful corner filled with indoor plants like lucky bamboo, rubber plant, peace lily, etc. We can turn it into a sanctuary where you can relax, unwind, and connect with nature whenever you need a break from the busy world around you.
  3. Host an Environmental Workshop: While we’re making strides toward a more sustainable planet, many people are still unaware of the simple ways they can contribute. Consider hosting an informative workshop where you can share the importance of keeping our environment clean, healthy, and green. Teaching what you’ve learnt till now about saving your environment can give you a sense of accomplishment and also make a difference.
  4. Join Plant-Loving Communities: There are countless plant-loving communities out there where enthusiasts like you can connect, share tips, and learn new ways to celebrate the environment. Becoming part of these communities allows you to exchange ideas and inspire others on how to live more sustainably.
  5. No Plastic: One no to plastic can save a kind of pollution that lasts for a longer time. Embrace a plastic-free lifestyle or choose to avoid single-use plastic and encourage others to do the same. Speaking as someone who has practised it, it becomes a movement that you enjoy at a personal level. It’s been a year since my family and I switched to no single-use plastic, and we are enjoying it. We drop reminders while carrying bags while going shopping and avoiding the use of plastic cups.

Why Do Eco-friendly Plants Matter?

Growing up, I’ve seen plants play a huge role in keeping our environment clean. At our homes, they are not just beautiful pieces of decor but are vital to our planet. So, now that I work at a company that focuses on the environment, if someone were to ask me how to celebrate Environment Day, my response would be to invest in eco-friendly plants.

For instance, in my own home, we had a beautiful snake plant. This plant didn’t require much attention—despite my mother occasionally forgetting to water it, it thrived. The snake plant is a perfect example of an eco-friendly plant that not only adds beauty to your space but is also incredibly low-maintenance and great at purifying the air. This personal experience reminds me that even small, easy-to-care-for plants can make a big difference in our homes and the environment.

A few other plant options are:

  • Peace Lily

Peace Lily is not only easy to care for but also effective in removing toxins like formaldehyde and benzene from the air. Its elegant white blooms and glossy green leaves add a touch of tranquillity to any space, making it a perfect eco-friendly addition to your home. It is a plant for which we never forget to sing praises.

  • Rubber Plant

Its large, dark green leaves not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of any room but also contribute to improving indoor air quality, making it a great eco-friendly choice. Don’t forget to keep it in the main area, as this plant always flaunts and makes a unique appeal.

  • ZZ Plant

The ZZ Plant gives a premium look in your indoor space, and can accompany you for a longer time. It is also a great low maintenance gifting option that promises a cleaner and more eco-friendly indoor environment.

  • Money Plant

One name that goes on almost every plant list, money plant has become a go to choice for every beginner. Its trailing vines are ideal for both decorative purposes and for enhancing air quality, making it a great eco-conscious addition to any home or office space.

  • Lucky Bamboo

Looking forward to bringing a touch of greenery to a small space? Lucky Bamboo is one of the leading options. This plant isn’t bamboo, but its unique appearance and symbolism of good fortune make it a popular choice. It not only creates a calm and positive environment, but also purifies the air around.

  • Ferns

Ferns are nature’s excellent options for shady and humid spaces. They are low-maintenance plants that help you breathe in fresh air.

What are the benefits of Eco-Friendly Plants?

  1. Air Purification: The plants that we grow are natural purifiers that help us breathe in fresh air. When placed in homes, offices, and other indoor spaces, they make the air around us feel healthier. In the year 1989, NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) conducted a study to assess the impact of plants on indoor air. In this discovery, they found that plants can filter out harmful toxins from the air. They can get rid of formaldehyde (toxins present in building materials), benzene (which is a result of smoking), and other such VOCS (Volatile Organic Compounds) present in the air.
  2. Promotes Biodiversity: Certain plants, like marigold and sunflowers, attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and birds, while also providing them with shelter. By bringing these plants into your home or garden, you’re unknowingly supporting your local ecosystem. This is especially important, as many pollinator species are at risk of disappearing. As pollinators are a big part of this entire ecosystem, and many plant species are reliant on them for reproduction, contributing to their survival through the plants we choose can make a huge difference.
  3. Help us build a connection with nature: Plants can benefit us in building a connection with nature. A plant at home can become a part of the family. You tend to it every day, watch it grow, and know its needs can help you make a connection with your plant buddy.
  4. Improves Soil Health: Soil helps a plant in a lot of ways, but did you know that it’s a 50/50 situation? As soil helps in facilitating nutrient flow to the plant, similarly, plants hold the soil together and prevent soil erosion, which further impacts the fertility of the soil.
  5. Reducing the carbon footprint present in the atmosphere: Plants are known to absorb carbon dioxide that we release and release oxygen, which benefits us in living a healthier lifestyle.
